Dennis Ellsworth – April 27

Dennis Ellsworth, recently named the SOCAN Songwriter of the Year at the 2019 Music PEI Awards, makes his Patchwork debut on April 27.  Long regarded as one of the finest singer-songwriters to come out of Atlantic Canada, we are very excited to welcome him to our living room.

In 2017, Dennis Ellsworth needed to make a new album. And it was an emergency.  So, who better to call for assistance than Joel Plaskett, who assumed production duties and enlisted his friends, Charles Austin and Dave Marsh, to fully participate. The result is Ellsworth’s fifth solo LP, Things Change, (released last year), a brilliant convergence of his irresistible power pop songwriting chops with Plaskett and co.’s trademark vintage guitar-driven sound.

After two decades of making music in various incarnations, Ellsworth chalks up what he’s accomplished on Things Change in large part to simply being older and wiser. “For years I wrote dark, smooth, romantic alt-country-ish type songs,” he says. “I don’t know how I ever got there but I stuck with it for a while. I love those records, but I knew it was time I switched things up just to keep myself interested.

“So, now that it’s happened, I feel like I’ve entered into this new land of possibility and I’m gonna ride that wave for a bit. I also think my songwriting is getting stronger with every album. I feel like I’ve found a way to get a message across with the perfect balance. It’s still poetic but does a much better job of drawing a listener in with clear messages and some great combinations of words.”

Zamani & Logan Richard – March 30

To be able to say “I saw them when…..”  Here is one of those chances!

Zamani – 2019 ANSMA Emerging Artist of the Year &
Logan Richard – 2019 ECMA nominee for Blues recording of the year – together at Patchwork.

Logan Richard – ECMA 2019 Nominee for Blues Recording of the Year – grew up in Stratford, PEI.  He picked up the guitar at the age of 10 and quickly became known among the local blues crowd as a force to be reckoned with.  At age 12, Logan formed a blues group with some friends called “Ripped Paper” and played venues all over Prince Edward Island.  This led to a few other groups including The Elusive Kings, Generator and (my favourite name) The Love Junkies.

Logan recently released “Lover Again” – a new single which is getting a ton of airplay on CBC, adding to his 3 song EP entitled “The Split” and a follow up single titled “Halfway to Go”. He has shared the stage with Tim Chaisson, Paper Lions and Charlie A’Court and on March 30, will share the stage with Zamani.

Zamani has been described as captivating, satiny-soulful and refreshingly pure and she is but 17 years old.  Zamani skillfully composes, produces, and performs a unique brand of R&B, Soul, Jazz and Pop. Hailing from a musical family (her mother is an award-winning songwriter and her father is an award-winning smooth jazz guitarist), Zamani’s unique musical style reflects a variety of eclectic musical exposures with inspriation from India Arie, Erykah Badu, Nina Simone, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, Mariah Carey and Beyonce.

After wowing an audience at the age of 13, Zamani’s debut jazz performance at the Halifax TD International Jazz Festival won her the praise of Jazz Festival headliner Sharon Jones of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and earned her a spot on the African Nova Scotian Music Awards (ANSMA). In 2018 she was named co-recipient of the ANSMA Portia White Youth Music Award and named a recipient of the Jongleur Youth Arts Performance Award by award winning Montreal-based jazz vocalist Jeri Brown.  Late last year, Zamani captured a lead role in the World premiere of Viola Desmond – The Musical.

Now with three single recordings recently released to Soundcloud, two music videos released to YouTube (“Switchin Lanes” and “Lush Life”) an R&B recording set for release in the summer 2019, along with a summer performance lineup that includes performances in Vancouver, Toronto, Rotterdam, Netherlands (The New Skool Rules Festival) and St. Lucia (Roots and Soul Festival), Zamani is poised to make her international debut.

It gives us great pleasure to introduce Halifax area audiences to these two up-and-coming, ‘set to take off’ blues/jazz/R&B artists.  Join us for a little magic in the making.

Saturday, March 30. Doors: 7:30 PM; Show time: 8 PM. Tickets $16 via Event Brite: Zamani & Logan Richard

BYOB.  Snacks offered and welcome. Please share with friends who love supporting live music as much as you and I do.

Ariana Nasr & Curtis Thorpe – Sunday matinee

February is here and already the days are feeling longer!  If you need a little escape from the cold, let this next show carry you away…..

Ariana Nasr & Curtis Thorpe  are two multi-instrumentalists who really click. Although they now make their home in Montréal, both hail from Nova Scotia where they each had separate music careers for many years. It was only in the fall of 2016 when Ariana asked Curtis to accompany her Piaf & Brel show that the click was formed.

Ariana can and will sing almost anything. You can catch her interpreting jazz, soul or world classics, but her most popular performance has been her interpretation of the music of Édith Piaf. She spent the last several years creating and touring a tribute show to French greats Édith Piaf and Jacques Brel. The logical next step was to move to a French speaking environment! Thus, Ariana and Curtis relocated to Montréal together in January 2017 to pursue their love of performance and the French language.

Curtis is a versatile player who can deliver a gorgeous solo performance featuring complex finger-style guitar picking, or he could be found playing electric guitar or bass in a rock band. And many things in between. He loves the harmonica as a solo instrument and has integrated it as both accompaniment and solo instrument in his performances. In the duo show he is a one-man band playing guitar, harmonica and percussion simultaneously whilst Ariana sings, plays soprano saxophone (her first love), accordion or violin.  Last summer, Ariana Nasr & Curtis Thorpe released a CD titled “Padam Padam” – featuring classics from France, the Balkans and the Americas.

Join us for this special matinee performance on Sunday, February 10 @ 3 pm  (Doors at 2:30 pm)  Tickets
