Patchwork House Concerts presents Breagh MacKinnon and Carleton Stone on Saturday, September 21.

BREAGH MACKINNON  was nominated for the 2013 Music Nova Scotia Music Award for New Artist of the Year.  This follows an earlier ECMA nomination in the Rising Star Category.  With a voice that digs deep into your heart, smooth guitar lines, and jazzy interludes, Breagh’s debut album Where The Days Went, released September 25, truly flaunts the timeless sound that sets her apart.  She draws inspiration from her formal Jazz training as well as her extensive songwriting collaborations – with Dylan Guthro, Carleton Stone, Natalia Zukerman, Gordie Sampson, and Steve MacDougall.

Her song “White Picket Love” propelled Breagh into a finalist position at the Ottawa Bluesfest ‘She’s The One Contest’ and recently, the International Mountain Stage NewSong Contest.

CARLETON STONE is a charismatic performer and soulful songwriter whose sophomore recording (produced by Juno Award-winner Hawksley Workman) has brought him regional accolades – three NS Music Award Nominations and an East Coast Music Award nomination for Pop Recording of the Year – and national attention.  The music sparkles with contemporary smart-pop energy, clever hooks and the infectious exuberance of a songwriter with his eye firmly on the prize.  In the words of CBC’s Bob Mersereau, “The new star on the horizon belongs to Carleton Stone, who is quickly developing into a major national talent.”

Carleton is a prolific writer with songs gaining him placements on NBC’s Saving Hope, CW’s The LA Complex and CBC’s Being Erica. He is a Leader at the Gordie Sampson Songcamp which takes place every summer in Ingonish and is becoming increasingly well known for a vast array of collaborations.  I’ve seen Carleton perform several times and he has a real gift for engaging with his audience.

I hope everyone is having a great summer.  To make it even better we are welcoming back Steve Poltz for (I believe) his 6^thperformance at Patchwork.  Last time he played here he was up on the furniture singing a new song about the Higgs-Bozon particle!  We’ve seen Steve perform at least a dozen times and no two shows are alike.  So whether you have seen Steve perform in the past or not, you haven’t been to this show:

*A Patchwork House Concert is a special experience. It’s a chance to really listen to live music by great Canadian and international artists in a relaxed, intimate atmosphere. It’s kind of like having your favorite artists play in your living room.  Heck, that’s exactly what it is! 

Shows generally start early (at 8 pm) so we begin welcoming guests around 7:30pm to allow everyone time to get a soft drink (or if you have brought your own, something stronger), grab a snack, find a seat and get comfortable. 

Usually we have 2 sets with a break in between for enjoying some refreshments, socializing, and maybe having a chat with one of the artists. CDs and other musician merchandise are often available for purchase so it is wise to bring a little extra cash to pick up a cd or two for your music collection.  At the break, we also collect money for the show.  All the proceeds go to the performers.

Why do we do this?  Well, we like listening to live music in small spaces.  We like the little bit of extra chaos this brings to our lives. We like the fact that we are supporting hard-working musicians.  We like seeing old friends and meeting new people.  We hope to see you soon!
