Katey Brooks & Devarrow – December 3

UK based Katey Brooks joins local boy Graham Ereaux (Devarrow) for a killer show to end the year.  Saturday, December 3 @ 8 pm.  $20 at the door.

Singer-songwriter Katey Brooksʼ unique sound epitomizes the culturally diverse environment in which she grew up. Born and raised between Bristol, London and Arizona to musical parents, the Indie Award nominee is best described as a female Hozier, with all the haunting intensity and every bit of the soul.
With a “voice to melt glaciers” (Venue Magazine) Brooks is at home anywhere she can take her guitar. From the London 2012 Olympics to Glastonbury Festival, from WOMAD to Abbey Road, Brooksʼ “devastating vocal talent” (Just Music That I Like) has garnered her admirers from across the spectrum of the industry, seeing her feature on tracks with Paloma Faith, Imelda May, The Rolling Stonesʼ Bill Wyman, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd and Brian May – not to mention sharing the bill with acts like Newton Faulkner, Ghostpoet, Deaf Havana and Mystery Jets.
Fast becoming a radio favourite, “not to be missed” (Time Out) Brooksʼ music has been hailed on BBC Radio 1, 2 and 6, and sheʼs recently been added to the Starbucks playlist worldwide. The haunting, ethereal sound of her latest EP I Fought Lovers is a prelude to the sonic largesse of future releases, as she heads to the studio to record her new album with a few of Britainʼs finest.

Devarrow is the stage-name of Graham Ereaux, a singer-songwriter originally from Moncton and now living in Halifax. Known for honest songs as well as energetic, captivating and intimate live shows performed in the raconteur style, Devarrow is quickly becoming an intriguing emerging songwriter. He performs live as a one-man-band, singing, playing harmonica, electric and acoustic guitar, and a cajon as a kick drum.  Devarrow’s most recent release, The Great Escape, is eleven songs built from the sounds of an aged guitar played on damp and cold nights, drum loops created on a computer while in city cafes, and sharp double-tracked vocal inspired by the hiss of city streets. The album was meticulously written in a tiny leaky-roofed apartment while Ereaux spent a winter living in Vancouver, British Columbia.  “The Great Escape is a compelling mash-up of progressive folk guitar riffs blanketed with clanky, distorted lead guitar melodies; sturdily rooting itself as no slouch within it’s genre. With haunting and shadowy double-tracked vocals that remind mostly of Patrick Watson with a hint of The Avett Brothers, but also with a certain likeness to Danny Michel, Devarrow has effectively achieved an indie folk feel with grungy, somehow bluegrassy undertones.” – Clynton Brooks

The Blue Engine String Quartet performs Thanksgiving Show at Patchwork

Autumn is upon us!  Time to celebrate the harvest with ….music.  On Saturday, October 8 Patchwork House Concerts gleefully presents the Blue Engine String Quartet!

Regular patrons of Symphony Nova Scotia will recognize these fine string playing performers.  While the SNS calendar keeps them very busy, they manage to carve out time to play together as a quartet with the likes of Erin Costelo (who joined them for a sold out show at Patchwork last year) and soprano & Order of Canada recipient Suzie LeBlanc. They have carved out Saturday, October 8 to perform a Thanksgiving show for YOU.  Yes this is Thanksgiving week-end so prep your Sunday dinner on Saturday afternoon and head over with any guests from out of town you wish to impress with the calibre of music generally heard at fine concert halls, not in cozy living rooms.

Saturday, October 8.  $30 per person.  Show time: 8 pm.

Book your seat by messaging mleblanc.patchwork@gmail.com.  If you wish to guarantee a preferred spot in the living room, send us your payment in advance and we will put your name(s) on the best seats for you.

The repertoire of the quartet is large and broad.  Goodness knows what they will choose for us.  Whatever it is, it will knock your socks off!

Non-alcoholic beverages will be offered.  You are invited to take along any wine/beer/etc. that you wish to enjoy.  There will be a selection of munchies at the break.  Contributions to the munchies table will be shared happily although not required.

Please RSVP (and hold seats with advance payment) via email to mleblanc.patchwork@gmail.com or by calling 902 434-8355.
